  • A Long Swim

This morning I did my longest swim workout ever!  It kind of caught me by surprise despite having been on my schedule which I received three weeks ago.  Take a glance at this and it doesn't sound super-long, right? Warm-Up: 400 swim, 300 kick, 200 pull, 100 swim Main Set: 4x(500 swim, 2x250 pull, 5x100 swim, 10x50 hypoxic, 20x25 ...

  • Happy we'll be living under the sea

Today I had the joy of swimming laps with a snorkel for the first time in a very long time.  Or maybe ever.  I seem to remember attempting the "thar she blows" maneuver after a flipturn many years ago ... What I didn't remember was how freakin' hard it is to swim the crawl stroke with a snorkel.  First I found that my ...

  • sweet Mazatlan video

Here is a topic that is much more upbeat than injuries, at least depending on your perspective.  My friend Kim took this fun video of the swim start at Mazatlan.  I like that you can hear a bunch of spectators laughing in the background each time a wave hits us. http://picasaweb.google.com/whitekg/Mazatlan/photo#5201204037400001714

  • warning: this can be habit-forming

Two weeks into my fabulous new 2008 training program I've pretty much gotten used to the "up at 6, in the water by 6:30" schedule.  Today I woke up at 5:56am without my alarm going off.  It can be a bit tough to get to bed at a responsible hour but it's great to knock out that swim before 8am and still have time for ...

  • a minor(?) setback

I went to see Dr Adams today about my foot and while the x-ray was negative he recommended that I don't run/jump/pound on it for three weeks and we'll see if the pain goes away.  So it's better news than "6-8 weeks off plus a bunch of rehab."  So I can keep up my swimming and replace the running with some extra bike ...

  • Snow Day

Trying to learn from last year's mistakes, I'm going to take a Trainer Day today.  There is snow on the ground and the wind chill is 20 degrees before you even account for bike speed.  My first work-week with the new training schedule has gone reasonably well.  I'm certainly getting some swim+run overload but I ...

  • swimming in Seattle

Here is a first crack at "good places to swim in the Seattle area." If this develops into something useful then I'll cross-post a more formal version to the Training section of my static site. Open-water:   * Idylwood Park: near NE 40th St & W Lk Samm Pkwy in Redmond.  Friday mornings in the summer were a common ...

  • open water!

Two open-water swims in the last two days: yesterday Ben Collins and I hit up the balmy 56-degree waters of Lake Washington.  Today I swam in the balmy 56-degree waters of Lake Sammamish.  it's a beautiful time of year to be in Seattle. 5 days 'til Wildflower!

  • not hiding

it looks like I haven't posted in a little while, but fear not: the training continues.  I'm done 6 runs now, including back-to-back days on Fri & Sat.  My foot is responding "decently" - a bit of soreness that has me mildly worried...  but it hasn't hurt *during* the run the last two times out. my swim is ...

  • almost there

with two days left in the month of March I am proud to say that my log shows 99,600 yards of swimming.  It looks like I should make my goal of 100,000 yards this month with a day to spare.  Now what should the April goal be?  How about "run and bike enough that I can be fit for Wildflower?"
