  • Training update: running is hard

I've been shying away from listing my training details on this blog after reading Greg's comments about how boring these posts tend to be.  But I *am* one of those people who is "obsessed with how other triathletes are training" and I know that I'm not alone in that obsession, so here is a little guilty pleasure for both ...

  • time trial - but not what you think

I did a running time trial at the indoor tonight.  I'm racing the 3k at the UW Last Chance meet in 12 days so Tom had me do a 2k TT tonight at my goal pace.  My 3k target is 9:10-9:12 so we were shooting for 6:07-6:08.  I had a lot of company for the first 1k and I crossed the mark at 3:02.  Tony Young stuck around and ...

  • a new PR in the 5k

I ran 5000m on the track tonight and it was a really great experience.  My goal was to run steady 77-second laps (16:02.5) and go sub-16 with a bit of a kick.  The USAT "B" cut is 16:05, so my real goal was to just be under that time. Uli Steidl was looking for a few extra miles and signed up at the last minute.  He was ...

  • more training

This was another fun-filled week of training.  Up next for me race-wise is a 5k on the track this Wednesday (the 13th) at an all-comers meet.  I'll be shooting to get under the USAT "B" standard of 16:05.  David Cannon (super-fast masters runner) is also gonna try to break 16.  Jesse Williams is going to pace ...

  • mapping your run (or ride)

I've seen at least half a dozen options out there to measure, track and/or share running routes so I figure a review is in order. Microsoft Streets and Trips (Client software). I have to start here b/c I use this one more often than any other.  Its raison d'etre appears to be providing driving directions and whatnot for Car ...

  • MacGyver, eat your heart out!

Went on a ride today with Rhae and crashed into an 8 yr old on Lake Washington Blvd.  It was the kid's fault, I swear!! Later in the ride I broke a spoke... with the low-spoke-count Shimano R535 wheels we weren't sure whether I could get it true enough to limp home.  Plus neither of us had a spoke wrench...  but the chain ...

  • Running groups in Seattle

A co-worker was asking about training for a half-marathon so I figured I would put together a consolidated list of running groups in Seattle and on the East Side.  NW Runner magazine has the most comprehensive list of weekly runs that I have seen.  The current list is at ...

  • bridle trails

I tried to take some pictures on my run yesterday evening but it was starting to get dark and they didn't come out all that well.  A few of them look okay, so here they are. First is the fabulously steep path that you have to run down in order to get from my house to the park:   An eight to ten minute jog from my house ...
