A Day of Firsts

Yesterday I raced in the Lake Stevens 70.3 Triathlon and while it wasn't the first sprint finish in the short history of half-Ironman I had a lot of my own "firsts:" Deciding to do a pro race the day before -- I'd been hurt a bit and

Doubling Up

I apologize for the gap between posts -- I've been unusually busy lately as we went through our final preparations for the HealthVault Solutions Conference . Oh yeah, I also had the Escape from Alcatraz the day before the conference. Needless to say,

Seoul Survivor

I just got back from a memorable trip to Seoul for yesterday's ITU Asian Cup race.  At least I *think* it was yesterday -- we flew over the International Date Line about 16 hours ago so I'm not really sure what day of the week it is anymore. Let's

The Woodstock of Triathlon

Leading up to this Saturday's Avia Wildflower Long Course race I had a bit of bravado about how far my run has come.  I told anyone who would listen that I was hoping to get out there and log a sub-1:20 run split.  I didn't show enough respect

Early-Season Racing

As I mentioned in my last post, I did a write-up about recent racing action last week that got lost in the Series of Tubes that is the internet. Up here in Seattle, the weather has been hit-or-miss to the point that our March 29th bike race in Bellingham

How to Race Like a Chucklehead

I had a lot of fun at Team Group Health's Independence Valley Road Race this weekend and also showed why riders like me don't win bike races. Here are some tips that can make you into a strong perma-four, just like me: Train a lot. Be one of the

ITU Nevis Race Report

I'm working on a longer post about the Nevis trip but I need to use my home computer to upload all of the pictures. So for now you'll have to settle for just the race report. My goals were to make the main bike group, get my first top-ten finish

race reports!

My hiatus from blogging for the last two weeks leaves me with three races to write about. In chronological order... Mason Lake Road Race Series #1, March 1 My friend Ben and I talked strategy before this one and we planned to attempt similar moves in

TI & Tri-Cal Results

Yesterday's race was a painful battle of attrition. More than a quarter of the field dropped out due to crashes or flat tires and a quarter of those who finished ran their second 10k slower than 40 minutes. The first run was rather brisk, as expected,

Scott Tinley's

This past weekend I traveled to San Luis Obispo, CA for Scott Tinley's Adventures - a non-drafting olympic distance race. The trip itself was rather chaotic - I left my driver's license in my workout clothes after Wednesday night's track workout

kirkland tri

This morning I raced in the Kirkland Triathlon for the fourth straight year. In 2004 I placed a distant second behind Jon Salerno but I've managed to win the race each of the last three years. Kirkland is always a fun race for a few reasons: * the

Pac Grove

Today I effectively used a new strategy in draft-legal racing: I biked with the main group! The swim at today's Pacific Grove triathlon was a bit on the casual side but I positioned myself well and worked when I needed to work. I got out of the water

federal escape

This morning I raced in the Federal Escape olympic distance triathlon. I was going for the Three-Peat after winning the race in 2005 and in 2006. The Seattlites who've beaten me this year weren't around/available this weekend so I figured it might

cascades edge

This morning I raced in a local olympic distance triathlon - Cascades Edge. This was my first triathlon this year that didn't require an airline ticket. It's always fun to race locally with friends and family all around. The weather was cold and

a new PR in the 5k

I ran 5000m on the track tonight and it was a really great experience. My goal was to run steady 77-second laps (16:02.5) and go sub-16 with a bit of a kick. The USAT "B" cut is 16:05, so my real goal was to just be under that time. Uli Steidl
