back at it
nothing like a race to pump up your enthusiasm for training. I spent Sunday in Santa Cruz watching Markie V put together a crushing swim+bike and a solid run to finish 2nd overall at the Big Kahuna triathlon. He went like 4:08 for a half-IM! We grabbed tacos at an Austinesque taco stand after the race. I also ran into one of my old CMU Swimming teammates at the race, Steve Chiou. He's mentoring a Team in Training group in San Francisco.
My flight home was delayed a few hours and I didn't get home until 2am. Since then I've been working a *lot* and training whenever I can. Monday was just an easy run and a solid wolo swim workout. Tuesday I did two reps of the Kirkland Tri bike course, going hard on the hills and easy on the flats. Tuesday night was a masters swim. Wednesday I went straight to work in the morning but got a nice run workout in after work. Tom gave us a 10x{2min on, 1min off} fartlek workout and we were hitting the 2min "on" with a lot of... er... enthusiasm. Today (Thursday) I had a nice 2-hr ride with Todd Wanke, striving to go hard on the hills and moderate in between. He let me use his power meter which I have to admit was a lot of fun. We did a short brick run afterwards and made smoothies while entertianing / being entertained by his son, Karsten. After work we had a longish masters swim workout. My legs felt pretty dead at the start but once I got warmed up I did fine.
Tomorrow I'll do an open-water swim in the morning, possibly followed by a run depending how my right IT band feels - it started yapping a bit during Wednesday's run. I'm also hoping to meet up with soon-to-be CMU alumnus Steve Kaplan who is out here interviewing at the 'soft.
